Silk Painting

Explore basic techniques in silk painting including serti, wet-in-wet and wet-in-dry techniques, salt, shibori and more. You will be led through the design process once the basic techniques are explored and you will have the opportunity to produce a folio of samples or finished items. All materials are provided apart from silk for which there will be a small charge.

Course aim

To provide an introduction to the art of painting on silk

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed
  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Explore applying colour to silk
  • Experiment with gutta
  • Develop wet-in-wet and wet-in-dry techniques
  • Try shibori techniques
  • Produce a folio of samples

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor

What else do I need to know?

  • A selection of materials and basic equipment will be provided but you are welcome to bring additional materials with you
  • There will be a small charge to cover the cost of silk or students may bring their own

  • No pre reading or pre course work is required
