Basic Drawing

To build your confidence at developing drawing skills through instruction, using shapes and practical simple activities. These will comprise of sketching using pencils and would also include different media such as watercolour, acrylics, soft pastels, oil pastels, colouring pencils or pencil only. You will use line work, pattern, stippling, cross hatching, scribbling. Collage could also be used.

Course aim

This course will help build your confidence in observing and translating 3D objects to a 2D surface and improve your drawing skills to enable you to produce your own masterpiece.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed
  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Begin to draw with confidence using shapes and forms as a starting point.
  • Develop my observation and drawing skills.
  • Demonstrate how to use light and shade to create realism in a drawing.
  • Demonstrate the use of different techniques to render texture in a drawing.
  • Use different media to complete my picture. This could also include collage.

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • You will have the opportunity to practise what you have learned by sketching at home. Bring a picture/photo of your choice.

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions
  • A file of work will be kept which will help to record your progress
  • Your work will be displayed in own folder for you to reflect on.

What else do I need to know?

  • Nothing else is needed
  • All materials will be provided
  • A selection of materials and basic equipment will be provided but you are welcome to bring additional materials with you
  • You have the choice of bringing your own photo/picture to draw if you so wish.

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • No pre reading or pre course work is required
  • No pre reading is required but research on the subject on the internet or in the library may be helpful

What can I do next?

  • Progress to another WEA course
  • Become involved with the WEA in a range of voluntary work and other activities including campaigning as a WEA member
  • You could make drawing your hobby which could lead to further education in art?
