A mixed ability course for all who wish to understand traditional and contemporary methods for creating a portrait in both drawing and painting. We will study the following elements; proportions of the head, rotation of the head, methods for improving observational portrait drawing, looking at structure and anatomy of the head, exploration of mixing on a palette to evoke flesh tones and colours, paint techniques,the use of colour and value to create an illusion of solidity and light. The class will start with drawing and progress to painting in oils. You will work primarily from observation of portrait models. Taking inspiration from traditional and contemporary portrait artists. Students will learn by practical demonstration, looking at the work of traditional portrait painters, one to one tuition, tutor demos and group discussion. In a supportive and relaxed atmosphere.
Course aim

By the end of the course I should be able to:
- Draw portraits more accurately
- Draw portraits from a variety of view points
- Draw a head that looks three-dimensional
- Mix colours successfully from observation
- Produce portrait in oils.
How will I be taught?
- The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
What kind of feedback can I expect?
- You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
- You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
- You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions
- There will be a number of tasks appropriate to your course such as written work, creating art or craft, video, photography or small projects. Some of these may be marked to help you progress

- A selection of materials and basic equipment will be provided but you are welcome to bring additional materials with you
