This course teaches the various stages required to create an acrylic or oil portrait painting from a photograph. There are many variations of style possible from this overall course theme. You will be helped to determine your personal aims and facilitated to develop appropriate materials and techniques with which to express your ideas.

Course aim

This course teaches the various stages required to create an acrylic or oil portrait painting from a photograph.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • This course is for improvers
  • Some experience in painting is advisable, since this course is not for absolute beginners.

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • transfer a photographic outline to a canvas
  • use tonal contrast to achieve the solidity of the head
  • enhance the original photographic colour scheme through subtle colour mixing
  • depict different textures such as hair, skin and clothing
  • simplify a photographic image into a strong graphic poster-like rendition

How will I be taught?

  • You may be asked to undertake additional work in your own time to support your learning
  • Learning through doing – undertaking a variety of preliminary studies. Occasional brief demonstration of a technique. PowerPoints of modern artists who painted portraits from photographs will supplement practical work. Using reproductions to illustrate specific stylistic aspects. Personal rese

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions
  • 1:1 tuition presentation of work in progress whole group activity – writing a question about your work in progress, then everyone ‘visits’ each other’s work and written question and suggestions/answers are offered

What else do I need to know?

  • It would be helpful if you had access to the internet (Mobile phone, tablet or computer at home or through a library etc.)
  • Please bring 1) sketchbook 2) paints, eg acrylics, oils and associated materials such as low odour white spirit, turps, linseed oil 3) brushes – a variey including small soft brushes 4) painting support, eg canvas, mdf panels, dala board 5) Acrylic gesso, acrylic paint and cotton rags for c

  • No pre reading or pre course work is required
  • No pre reading is required but research on the subject on the internet or in the library may be helpful
