Creative Writing Taster Day

Ref: C2342684

This is a taster day for those who want to try a creative writing course, but is also open to current and past WEA creative writing students. Taught by a published author, it forms a day of creative writing activities in both poetry and prose. It is a fun day for trying new techniques and skills, and for discussing your work, or what you hope to write, with like-minded people. So come and have a go, and discover your writing talents.

Course aim

This taster day is open to anyone - current student or someone who feels they'd like to have a go at creative writing. Taught by a published author it breaks ideas in creative writing up into one day of exploration. So come and have fun with words!

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers
  • New writers may find that as well as learning from the tutor they will also learn from experienced writers who are there on the day.

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Explore what writing techniques will best suit what you wish to write.
  • Explore ideas and images using some of the techniques discussed on the day.
  • Use new skills, and discuss these with other writers.
  • Discuss your own 'style' - was there something you did on the day that seemed to fit with your writing 'voice'?

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions
  • If you ask on the day, the tutor can recommend how you can progress after the taster session.

What else do I need to know?

  • pen, paper, folder.

  • No pre reading or pre course work is required
  • Tutor's current books: Mr Bowlly Regrets - poems. Brand New Beat - stories set in the 1960s. Both 2017, King's England Press.
