Ref: C2342670

Before you can join the course, your Maths skills will be checked with a short test so the tutor can make sure the class is right for you. You will need to demonstrate that you have Maths skills at Level 1. You must be a fluent speaker of English. You do not need any Maths qualifications.

Course aim

This course will help you to enhance your skills and confidence in Maths. You will practise your Maths skills through everyday situations. This course leads to a City & Guilds Level 2 Functional Skills Maths qualification.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • You will need to talk to a member of staff and do a short activity to make sure the course is right for you. For more information and to book an appointment please call 0300 303 3464
  • You must be a fluent speaker of English.

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Further enhance my confidence in using my Maths in everyday life. Use shapes and data to support problem solving, e.g. using a building plan to lay floor tiles
  • Count, read, write, order and compare positive and negative numbers in practical contexts, e.g. calculating lottery wins or debt, understanding football league tables and temperature information
  • Use ratio and formulae to solve problems, e.g. understanding the ratio of flour to water in a recipe or changing the cooking time from a given formula (converting Fahrenheit to Centigrade)
  • Work with percentages, fractions and decimals to calculate and compare, e.g. working out overtime rates, completing a timesheet, working out currency exchange rates.
  • Calculate, record and measure time and units of measurement to perform practical tasks, e.g. how much carpet is needed for a room and how much this will cost from a total cost per metre. Identify the possible outcome of an event, e.g. tossing a coin.

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • You may be asked to undertake additional work in your own time to support your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions
  • There will be a number of tasks appropriate to your course such as written work, creating art or craft, video, photography or small projects. Some of these may be marked to help you progress

What else do I need to know?

  • Official document(s) showing the correct spelling of your name, address and date of birth. Certificates for any Maths qualifications you already have. A folder, some paper and a pen/pencil to every lesson.

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • No pre reading or pre course work is required
  • It is useful to think about where you use Maths in everyday life and where you find this difficult
