Summer Holiday - Summer Film

Ref: C2342636

With the holiday season approaching, here is a chance to see how filmmakers have taken on the subject, sometimes to celebrate, at others to question it. What do we as visitors want or expect from a holiday? Do we seek out the local culture or ignore it in our pursuit of sun and sangria? How do the residents view us? How are relationships between family or friends affected? Are old grievances resolved or worsened? Is that dream of a holiday romance ever likely to come true? And can a holiday ever change one's life?

Course aim

This course is designed to examine how holiday destinations, their people and culture, are represented and how we, as visitors, respond to them.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed
  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers
  • Like film itself, this course is designed to be an entertainment. But I would hope also that any students enrolled would find that film can ask questions, about the world as we see it and our responsibilities within it.

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Gain an appreciation of and state at least 2 different ways filmmakers depict holiday destinations.
  • State at least 1 example of how drama or comedy is played out in societies we do not know.
  • Explain how holiday films can explore wider concerns about the nature of relationships.
  • Give one example of how we as outsiders help or hinder the lives of those in whose country we come as guests.
  • State how concepts of power, masculinity, diplomacy are tested in a new environment.

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions

What else do I need to know?

  • Nothing else is needed
  • All materials will be provided
  • A selection of materials and basic equipment will be provided but you are welcome to bring additional materials with you

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • No pre reading or pre course work is required
