Film Noir and Crime

Film noir is one of the most distinctive of film genres. Here are conflicted heroes, dangerous women, vicious criminals, all prepared to do anything to get what they want. And the world where they live is often edgy and alien. This course will explore where the ideas and images that identify the genre came from, drawing on a knowledge of contemporary art, psychology, politics, all in a world that was embroiled in global war.

Course aim

To identify how films noirs are distinct from general crime films, and to explore the influences that came together to create the genre.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Define at least 2 key elements of what makes a film noir.
  • Identify the various character types.
  • Understand and give at least 2 examples of how tension, violence and sexual intrigue are created in a culture where there was strict censorship demands.
  • Give examples of the contemporary cultures that came from from Europe to define the genre.
  • State how film noir still influences many of the crime films produced today.

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions

What else do I need to know?

  • Nothing else is needed
  • All materials will be provided
