Social Pedagogy in Support of Adults - Part 1

The day will take a first step into the approach, looking at relationship-based, holistic and reflective practice. We will look at: History and Background - a bit of context 3Ps (Private, professional, personal) Common Third Head Heart Hand The day will be interactive, fun, and there will be opportunity to self-reflect, as well as taking a look at practices and leadership.

Course aim

This is the first of two days exploring Social Pedagogy with a cohort of learners. It will focus on the value base, origin, key concepts and models, and is suitable for those with no or limited knowledge of the professional discipline.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed
  • This course is for beginners
  • This course is for improvers
  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers
  • The course is very inclusive, a basic grasp of English is a helpful starting point.

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Understand a few principles of social pedagogy, and their potential in my practice.
  • Understand the priority given to self-reflection, and development, within social pedagogy.
  • Feel more familiar with the name (social pedagogy), its origin and emerging UK context.
  • Find pathways to any more information I may desire (online, UK network, international network).

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • You will be expected to carry out a range of activities in your own time
  • Whilst there is no 'homework', the tutor will strongly encourage learners to implement their learning in practice after the training.

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • This is an awareness raising course and there will be no monitoring of invidivuals' progress.

What else do I need to know?

  • Nothing else is needed
  • All materials will be provided

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • No pre reading is required but research on the subject on the internet or in the library may be helpful

  • Progress to another WEA course
  • Progress to Day 2, for the time being.
