Pattern Cutting for Dressmaking - Bodice

This course will follow on from the Pattern block course that’s teaches how to create a basic pattern block for a bodice and skirt. You will learn how to use the new tools and equipment, how to make a toile and alter it to fit. The course will teach you how to use this basic block to design and make top and blouse patterns from this basic block. You need to have made several items of clothing before using commercial patterns and have an understanding of garment construction.

Course aim

This course will follow on from the Pattern block course that’s teaches how to create a basic pattern block for a bodice and skirt. You will learn how to use the new tools and equipment, how to make a toile and alter it to fit.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • This course is for improvers

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • 1 Students will be able to understand and demonstrate how to design different top and blouse shapes from the basic block
  • 2 Students will be able to understand and demonstrate how to move and change the darts shapes and size to create different styles.
  • 3 Students will understand and be able to demonstrate how to create different types of sleeve and collar
  • 4 Students will understand and be able to demonstrate how to add to the length to the block
  • 5 Students will be able to understand and demonstrate how to add fullness to the block

How will I be taught?

  • Measuring and making the pattern will be a step by step process that will be taught in a group. Students will also be able to work at their own pace.

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions

What else do I need to know?

  • You will need a basic sewing kit, scissors, pins, chalk, needles, a quick unpick and tape measure. All large equipment and a length of calico are provided.

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • No pre reading is required but research on the subject on the internet or in the library may be helpful
