Sewing with Texture

During this course students will cover a range of different techniques to add texture to a piece of fabric. They will learn how to sew pin-tucks, smocking, pleats and further embellish their work with beading.

Course aim

To provide an insight into how to use texture in sewing to embellish and enhance a piece of fabric. This could involve pleats, tucks, smocking etc. These techniques can them be used in future sewing projects

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • This course is for improvers

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Sew Reverse Applique
  • know how to sew a variety of pin tucks
  • Use the stitch and slash technique
  • Sew couching onto a piece of fabric to embellish it

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions

What else do I need to know?

  • Students will need to bring a basic sewing kit including scissors, threads, pins, seam ripper and tailors chalk. A selection of donated fabrics will be available to use in class however, students a welcome to bring their own to use.

  • No pre reading or pre course work is required

  • Progress to another WEA course
  • Progress to a course with another provider
  • Some students from previous courses have gone on use the sewing skills learnt to make items to sell
