On this course students will learn a range of dressmaking techniques. They will learn how to read and interpret the large amount of information on sewing patterns to ensure they are making the correct sizings. Students will cover a range of techniques including seam finishes, darts, inserting zips, pockets, waistbands and facings to enable them to make a garment of their choice

Course aim

This course will cover a variety of dressmaking techniques to give students the skills to make clothes for themselves and others

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Understand and use commercial sewing patterns to sew garments
  • Effectively sew a zip in an item of clothing
  • Set a sleeve into a garment
  • Understand how to adjust a pattern to fit their specific measurements

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions

What else do I need to know?

  • Students will need to bring a basic sewing kit including scissors, pins, threads, seam ripper and tailors chalk. A variety of donated fabrics will be available to use in class to practice but students are welcome to bring their own

  • No pre reading or pre course work is required

  • Some students from previous courses have used the sewing skills they gained to sell their work
