Bag Making

This course will start with the basics of making bags, breaking their construction down into stages. Students will then progress onto adding different fastenings and pockets as well as learning different ways to add shape to a bag. Once the techniques have been learnt students will be equipped to customise their bag making to amend the sizing and shapes of bags as well as the finer details.

Course aim

To provide students with an insight into making bags, covering a range of techniques including how to line a bag, making strong handles, how to make different shaped bags, bag fastenings/closures and how to add pockets.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Make a lined bag
  • Add a zip fastening to a bag
  • Add appropriate pockets of their choice to their projects
  • Use darts, gussets and corner cut outs to add shaping to their projects

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions

What else do I need to know?

  • Students will need to bring a basic sewing kit each week including scissors, pins, threads, seam ripper and tailors chalk. A selection of donated fabrics are available for students to use or they are welcome to bring their own.

  • No pre reading or pre course work is required
