The Berlin Wall

Ref: C2342307

The Berlin Wall was an enduring symbol of the Cold War, and for many years it seemed to be a permanent fixture, keeping the German people divided and representing the barrier between the communist and capitalist worlds. But in 1989, it was breached and then dismantled, and today there is little left of it. This course will look at why it was built in the first place, how it affected people in Berlin and the rest of Germany over the 28 years of its existence, and the events in the 1980s that led to the fall of the Wall and with it the communist system in Eastern Europe.

Course aim

To look at the reasons for the building of the Berlin Wall in 1961 and the effects it had on the population of Berlin and East Germany, some of the attempts to cross from East to West when it was in existence, and the reasons why it was dismantled.
