Excel Spreadsheets for Databases

The course will look at the use of MS Excel as a database and will teach students how to construct populate and interrogate information in an excel spreadsheet. The course will include the construction of an Access database including constructing forms, queries and reports. The course will be a very practical hand on approach with projects based on real life needs and real situations rather than the theory of spreadsheets and databases.

Course aim

A course for students wishing to learn how to construct, populate and analyse data in Excel Spreadsheets and MS Access

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • This course is for improvers
  • The course is for students who already have a grasp of using excel for accounts and finance. Students should also be proficient in the use of Windows and saving and moving files.

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Create a simple excel database
  • Sort/filter and analyse information in a database including conditional formatting
  • Protect data integrity by the use of data validation and password protection
  • Construct a simple Access database and populate it
  • Construct forms, queries and reports in an Access database

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • You may be asked to undertake additional work in your own time to support your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions
  • A file of work will be kept which will help to record your progress

What else do I need to know?

  • If students have any real situations that they need to work on, for example through voluntary work or home situations, they are encouraged to bring them and work on them during the course
