If you are a beginner and need help getting started on a computer, or need to improve your current skills, explore our Beginners Digital Skills course to get you started on your journey. This is a non-accredited course which is a practical and flexible way of improving your IT skills. You will learn a variety of skills which will include finding and evaluating information, managing and storing information, creating and editing documents being just a few. You will learn how to create an email account, compose, reply and forward messages, attach and download files, using online services, buying securely online and digital wellbeing. At the end of the course the learners will gain confidence, make friends and communicate with friends and family via email as well as shop online.

Course aim

Develop skills using digital devices. Turn on the device and enter any account information as required, use a mouse and keyboard on a computer, use a touch screen on a smart phone or tablet, communicate with others digitally using email.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • This course is for beginners

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Turn on a device and use the available controls on that device.
  • Use a mouse and keyboard on a computer, use a touch screen on a smart phone or tablet.
  • Understand the importance of communicating securely, set up an email account, communicate with others digitally using email and other messaging apps.
  • Use word processing applications to create and format documents.
  • Set up online accounts with retailers to order and pay for goods online such as through Amazon or eBay.

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor

What else do I need to know?

  • It would be helpful if you had access to the internet (Mobile phone, tablet or computer at home or through a library etc.)

  • No pre reading or pre course work is required

Enrolment Conditions

As a registered charity, and to meet our funders’ requirements, we need to check a few things with you before you book. Please could we ask that you check the list below to ensure you meet our basic criteria:

  • You are paying the standard fee (with a credit or debit card) or you are on any of the qualifying benefits
  • You have a valid email address so that you can receive confirmation of your booking
  • You have been resident in the UK, EU or EEA for the last 3 years
  • You are aged 19 years or older on 1st September 2019
  • You have read and accept our standard terms and conditions
