The course would support the development of strategies to express yourself, by doing very simple activities of your choice or attempting some more challenging tasks. At times these could take you out of your comfort zone. The choice is entirely yours and remains completely non-judgemental

Course aim

The course aims to use different media as an outlet to express and promote a healthier you.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed
  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers
  • This course is for people with little spoken English
  • this course is also for everyone who may have physical and mental health issues, or simply for people who would like to experience the present moment and learn to put all intrusive thoughts away whether these are about the past or the future.

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • make a choice by learning to draw using basic shapes, produce an abstract painting, design my own mandala or simply make a decoupage; these activities may reflect the present moment, or/and* your past/future.
  • learn about the psychology of colours and how to associate them to my emotions and feelings.
  • express ways to feel positive about myself - I have the choice to choose a range of media.
  • appreciate that a beautiful drawing can also be obtained using pencils/charcoal and line work can be used to obtain different tones.
  • learn to reflect on my work - build my confidence to try different media,feel positive about myself and my own creativity, and be able to accept imperfections: remember that practice makes perfect.

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • You may be asked to undertake additional work in your own time to support your learning
  • You will be encoraged to bring a picture/photo of your choice. Reflect on the work done in the class and write a few notes (If you are unable to write, ask tutor/classroom assistant* to write notes for you.

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions
  • Your work will be displayed in your own work folder for you to reflect on.

What else do I need to know?

  • Nothing else is needed
  • All materials will be provided
  • A selection of materials and basic equipment will be provided but you are welcome to bring additional materials with you

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • No pre reading is required but research on the subject on the internet or in the library may be helpful

What can I do next?

  • Progress to another WEA course
  • Become involved with the WEA in a range of voluntary work and other activities including campaigning as a WEA member
  • possibility to attend basic drawing/botanical classes with the WEA

  • You have been resident in the UK, EU or EEA for the last 3 years
  • You are aged 19 years or older on 1st September 2019
