The course will enable you to understand the requirements of food hygiene standards, demonstrate the ability to follow instructions and work independently in a baking environment in preparation for volunteering.

Course aim

The course aims to provide you with the basic understanding of food hygiene knowledge and experience in a baking setting, which could result in either undertaking a further baking course or volunteering opportunities.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed
  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Apply the appropriate food hygiene standards and practice in a food production
  • Demonstrate the ability at a basic level to identify, think independently and problem solve in a baking environment.
  • Demonstrate a basic understanding of methamatical concepts in scaling and measuring whilst following recipes.
  • Demonstrate an awareness of diverse beliefs and practices and the impact of culture on food.
  • Communicate in oral and written forms with their peers and tutors.

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • You will be able to keep a record of your progress and achievement using photos, audio, text or documents uploaded into the WEA’s digital learning platform, WEA Canvas.
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions
  • A file of work will be kept which will help to record your progress

What else do I need to know?

  • A selection of materials and basic equipment will be provided but you are welcome to bring additional materials with you
  • notebook pen apron

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • No pre reading or pre course work is required
