Creative Writing Advanced

Are you in a rut with your writing? This course is designed to help you move your poetry writing to the next (more advanced) level. This might be by developing a sequence or small collection for a pamphlet or concentrating on finding new ways of developing individual poems, or even ways to start writing. The focus of the course is on experimentation and finding a process (or processes) that works for you in response to a variety of prompts and sources e.g. other poems, news articles, images, music, objects. You will work individually and collaboratively and will be encouraged to reflect on your own poems and to give feedback on other people's. There will be reading/writing activities to complete at home. The emphasis is on developing excellent practice within a supportive environment.

Course aim

This course is designed to help participants move to their poetry writing to the next level. This will be done by experimenting with different ways to write poems in response to a variety of prompts and sources e.g. written, visual and auditory.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • apply a variety of different techniques to writing poetry
  • reflect on own work - and other people's - with a view to giving constructive feedback
  • discuss features of a variety of different poems
  • identify particularly useful ideas for own personal writing process
  • access online and print resources

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • You may be asked to undertake additional work in your own time to support your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions
  • There will be a number of tasks appropriate to your course such as written work, creating art or craft, video, photography or small projects. Some of these may be marked to help you progress

What else do I need to know?

  • It would be helpful if you had access to the internet (Mobile phone, tablet or computer at home or through a library etc.)
  • Pen Writing pad /Notebook for drafting and re-drafting poems Notebook/Journal -for personal practice-based use

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • No pre reading or pre course work is required
