This course will teach you how to make different styles of skirt from the basic block made in the previous course. Also, how to alter the block to change the length and fullness by adding pleats and how to make different types of waistband.You need to have made several items of clothing before using commercial patterns and have an understanding of garment construction.

Course aim

This course will teach you how to create new paper patterns to make different styles of skirt from the basic block made in the previous course.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • This course is for improvers

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • 1 Students will be able to understand and demonstrate how to design different skirt shapes from the basic skirt block
  • 2 Students will be able to understand and demonstrate how to close the darts and extend the panels to create fuller A line shapes
  • 3 Students will understand and be able to demonstrate how to create different types of waistband
  • 4 Students will understand and be able to demonstrate how to add to the length to the block
  • 5 Students will be able to understand and demonstrate how to add pleats to the block

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • Measuring and making the block will be a step by step process that will be taught in a group. Students will also be able to work at their own pace.

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions

What else do I need to know?

  • A selection of materials and basic equipment will be provided but you are welcome to bring additional materials with you
  • You will need a basic sewing kit, scissors, pins, chalk, needles, a quick unpick and tape measure. All large equipment and a length of calico are provided.

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • No pre reading is required but research on the subject on the internet or in the library may be helpful
