This course will teach you how to make a basic block, so you can create and make your own pattern and sew your own designs. Also, how to measure your body and how to create a basic pattern block for a bodice and skirt. You will learn how to use the new tools and equipment, how to transfer the measurements, how to make a toile and alter it to fit. You need to have made several items of clothing before using commercial patterns and have an understanding of garment construction.

Course aim

This course will teach you how to measure your body and how to create a basic pattern block for a bodice and skirt. You will learn how to use the new tools and equipment, how to make a toile and alter it to fit.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • This course is for improvers

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • 1 Students will be able to understand and demonstrate how to measure the body
  • 2 Students will understand how to use the new tools and equipment
  • 3 Students will learn how to transfer these measurements into pattern pieces for a basic bodice & skirt block
  • 4 Students will be able to understand and demonstrate how to make a toile from these pattern pieces
  • 5 Students will be able to understand and demonstrate how to alter the toile and alter the paper pattern to fit

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • Measuring and making the block will be a step by step process that will be taught in a group. Students will also be able to work at their own pace.

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions

What else do I need to know?

  • A selection of materials and basic equipment will be provided but you are welcome to bring additional materials with you
  • You will need a basic sewing kit, scissors, pins, chalk, needles, a quick unpick and tape measure. All large equipment and a length of calico are provided.

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • No pre reading is required but research on the subject on the internet or in the library may be helpful
