This course aims to provide an introduction to sewing and Dressmaking, how to use a sewing machine and how to start making your own accessories and clothing. We will use commercial dress patterns and students will be encouraged to make their own projects out of their own choice of fabrics.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

- This course is for beginners
By the end of the course I should be able to:
- Students will understand the properties of a range of cotton fabrics
- Students will be able to use a lockstitch sewing machine
- Students will be able to understand commercial Dressmaking patterns
- Students will be able to understand and demonstrate basic seam and construction techniques
- Students will be able to understand and demonstrate basic hand sewn finishing techniques
How will I be taught?
- The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
What kind of feedback can I expect?
- You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
- You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
- You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions
What else do I need to know?
- A selection of materials and basic equipment will be provided but you are welcome to bring additional materials with you
- Please bring a sewing kit of scissors, pins, tape measure, chalk, sewing threads, needles & a quick unpick. Sewing machines, irons, ironing boards and tailors dummies are provided.
