Improvers Sewing Skills

This course will cover a range of more detailed sewing skills enabling students to work on aspects such as applique, free machine embroidery, patchwork, inserting zips through a variety of methods and bag making working on a range of styles and with different fabrics to practice the skills learnt and make a number of projects throughout the course. There will also be a number of weeks towards the end of the course when students can work on projects of their own choice to further practice the skills and take them further

Course aim

To enable students to learn some more technical sewing skills to enhance their basic skills to take their work to the next level

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • This course is for improvers

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Sew Machine Applique Techniques including Reverse Applique
  • Free Machine Embroidery
  • Make a fully lined bag with a zip top closure
  • Sew with more complex fabrics, learning how best to handle those and any special equipment required
  • Learn how to use a dressmaking pattern, understanding the markings and notions used

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions
  • There will be a number of tasks appropriate to your course such as written work, creating art or craft, video, photography or small projects. Some of these may be marked to help you progress

What else do I need to know?

  • A basic sewing kit including scissors, pins, tape measure etc is required. Each week small amounts of fabric will be used which can either be used from donated supplies or be purchased new. Local charity shops are also a great resource for materials.

  • No pre reading or pre course work is required

What can I do next?

  • Progress to another WEA course
  • Progress to a course with another provider
  • Become involved with the WEA in a range of voluntary work and other activities including campaigning as a WEA member
  • Become involved as a volunteer for a WEA partner or another organisation
