On this course you will learn how to safely use a range of patchwork equipment, how to accurately cut and machine sew patchwork pieces to create a variety of patchwork designs

Course aim

On this course you will firstly learn how to use patchwork equipment safely before going on to sew an range of different patchwork patterns and designs

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed
  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Know how to safely use quilting equipment
  • Understand the importance of accurate cutting
  • Understand the importance of accurate sewing
  • Sew a range of patchwork paterns
  • Learn how to quilt the patchwork pieces made

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions
  • There will be a number of tasks appropriate to your course such as written work, creating art or craft, video, photography or small projects. Some of these may be marked to help you progress

What else do I need to know?

  • A basic sewing kit including scissors, pins, tape measure etc is required along with a rotary cutter, cutting mat and quilting ruler. Each week small amounts of cotton fabrics will be required

  • No pre reading or pre course work is required

What can I do next?

  • Progress to another WEA course
  • Progress to a course with another provider
  • Become involved with the WEA in a range of voluntary work and other activities including campaigning as a WEA member
  • Become involved as a volunteer for a WEA partner or another organisation
