"Working in an Office" offers real life learning about the business of office work, including running a small business. Experience individual and group problem solving. You will devise approaches to achieving goals, monitoring progress and be able to identify the best aids to achieving them, including the use of office tools such as computer software and other technologies to help your office or business. All the skills developed are invaluable in the office, business and home environment. This course demonstrates how skills developed during computing classes or pother environments can be applied in a practical way and help develop interpersonal skills essential for the modern workplace.

Course aim

To develop and maintain the skills needed to perform effectively in a real work situation including home working and running a small business.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Research a product or service and present its benefits and drawbacks based on accounts, costs, income generated and expenditure
  • Working in a small group collate information such as contacts, products or budgets into a format for storage and providing management/decision making information
  • Prepare and agenda and chair a meeting
  • Work in a small group prepare a project plan for a business or project and identify Performance Indicators, Milestones ans Action Points
  • Explore ways of backing up data, keeping it safe and online security

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • You may be asked to undertake additional work in your own time to support your learning
  • You will be expected to carry out a range of activities in your own time

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions
  • A file of work will be kept which will help to record your progress
  • There will be a number of tasks appropriate to your course such as written work, creating art or craft, video, photography or small projects. Some of these may be marked to help you progress

What else do I need to know?

  • Students are encouraged to bring their own laptops and devices

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • Students are expected to have a good knowledge of basic MS Office functions such as file management, opening and closing office programmes and creating new documents

  • Progress to another WEA course
  • Progress to a course with another provider
  • Become involved with the WEA in a range of voluntary work and other activities including campaigning as a WEA member
