Celebrating the 150th anniversary of Hector Berlioz`s death, this course will investigate the life times and music of the French composer Hector Berlioz, and put into context the influential style of Hector Berlioz`s music. In addition the distinctive musical characteristics associated with 19th Romanticism , as exemplified in H.Berlioz`s music , will be studied. Furthermore , H.Berlioz`s significant contributions to the modern orchestra , with his treatise on instrumentation will be briefly considered.

Course aim

This course celebrates the 150th anniversary of the early 19th century French composer, Hector Berlioz, and will consider how his musical style associated with 19th century Romanticism became very influential to subsequent composers.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed
  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Be able to identify the basic elements bound within music
  • Be able to briefly describe H.Berlioz`s life circumstances and contemporary times.
  • Be able to briefly describe Romantic musical style.
  • Be able to recall a few of H.Berlioz's compositions.

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
