Effective Campaigning

Whether you want to save your local pub, oppose a planning application, run a successful trade union campaign at work, or if you are an anti-poverty activist who wants to get the law changed, you need to know how to campaign to win and influence decisions. It is about getting things done in the political arena. This is a practical course and can be tailored to specific campaigns but will also suit the generalist. It will include opportunities to rehearse some of the skills needed to run a successful campaign.

Course aim

To provide a an insight into of effective campaigning and how to influence change. The course will look at practical techniques and campaign tactics in the context of a planned campaign with clear objectives and based on available resources.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed
  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Set campaign goals, assess available resources, recruit members or supporters to my cause, evaluate progress and measure results.
  • Run a more effective campaign
  • Influence decision makers

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions
  • There will be a number of tasks appropriate to your course such as written work, creating art or craft, video, photography or small projects. Some of these may be marked to help you progress

What else do I need to know?

  • Nothing else is needed

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • No pre reading or pre course work is required

What can I do next?

  • Become involved with the WEA in a range of voluntary work and other activities including campaigning as a WEA member
