Sewing Work Shop for Beginners

In this course is to equip participants with the relevant skills to make clothing using a sewing pattern as a guide.This course is for completely beginners and we will be covering how to take accurate body measurements, interpret these to a sewing pattern and make any necessary adjustments to the pattern. We will discuss and identify suitable fabrics for individual projects and learn how to prepare and cut out fabric. We will develop sewing machine skills from how to set up and operate a sewing machine, through to finishing a garment using the appropriate techniques.

Course aim

Learn how to sew clothes that fit.We will start with the basics and cover taking measurements and adjusting a pattern, Develop your sewing skills to include professional finishing techniques and interpret a sewing pattern to complete a garment.

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Safe use of a sewing machine.
  • Machine stitches and use of different machine feet.
  • Have knowledge of body measurements.
  • How to make pattern after taking measurements.
  • Making garments [minimum 2]

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • You may be asked to undertake additional work in your own time to support your learning
  • You will be expected to carry out a range of activities in your own time

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions
  • A file of work will be kept which will help to record your progress
  • There will be a number of tasks appropriate to your course such as written work, creating art or craft, video, photography or small projects. Some of these may be marked to help you progress
  • One to one feedback and group feedback will be provided.You will be encouraged to work together with your fellow students and tutor. You will be asked to share your ideas and views in the class and work with the group to give and accept feedback in a supportive environment

What else do I need to know?

  • Nothing else is needed
  • A selection of materials and basic equipment will be provided but you are welcome to bring additional materials with you
  • It would be helpful if you had access to the internet (Mobile phone, tablet or computer at home or through a library etc.)
  • sewing machines will be provided but you are welcome to bring your own sewing machine if you would prefer practicing on it. You can also bring your own sewing kit and thread. You will also need to bring your own fabric for you own garment but materiel be provided for the practice samples.

  • No pre reading or pre course work is required
  • No pre reading is required but research on the subject on the internet or in the library may be helpful
