Anglo Saxon Culture

This course explores the language and culture of the Anglo-Saxons. It will cover a brief introduction to Anglo-Saxon history, culture and society, and the origins of the English language. It will provide participants with the opportunity to try out speaking, reading and translating Old English, and offer an account of the grammar and vocabulary of the language. No prior knowledge of Old English is needed.

Course aim

The course aims to introduce students to the world of the Anglo-Saxons through an exploration of their culture, their language and their history. It also aims to create or enhance an understanding of the origins of the language we use every day.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • A reasonable knowledge of modern English will be helpful for students joining this course, but no formal qualifcations.

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Explore the culture of the Anglo-Saxons
  • Develop skills in understanding and translating Old English
  • Enhance your understanding of modern English and its structure
  • Develop skills in analyzing Old and modern English texts
  • Develop an understanding of the grammar and structure of the language

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • You may be asked to undertake additional work in your own time to support your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions
  • A file of work will be kept which will help to record your progress
  • There will be a number of tasks appropriate to your course such as written work, creating art or craft, video, photography or small projects. Some of these may be marked to help you progress

  • Nothing else is needed

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • No pre reading or pre course work is required
  • The tutor will advise on reading and other information sources at the first session.
