The course focuses on the conflict in the Middle East from the death of Nasser to the emergence of Netanyahu. The following themes will be studied during the course: 1. The death of Nasser and the events leading to the Yom Kippur War of 1973. 2. The Camp David agreements of 1978. 3. The wars in Lebanon 1978 and 1982. 4. The Palestinian Intifada of 1987 - 1993. 5. Israeli - Palestinian peacemaking in the 1990's. 6 The rise of political Islam - Hamas and Hezbollah. 7. The second Intifada and after 2000 – 2011

Course aim

Enemies and Neighbours. Understanding the continuing conflict between Israel and the Arabs: from Nasser to Netanyahu 1973-2011

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • The course is for anyone with an interest in the politics of the Middle East.

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • • To analyse the vacuum left by the death of Nasser in the cause of Arab Nationalism
  • • To explain the causes and consequences of the October War in 1973.
  • • To determine how the war in 1973 led to the peace in 1978.
  • • To investigate the origins and course of the wars in Lebanon, the Israeli public reaction and the withdrawal of the PLO.
  • • To describe and evaluate the changing nature of the Arab and Palestinian opposition to Israel; from the emergence of the Intifada protests to the rise of political Islam

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion

What else do I need to know?

  • A selection of materials and basic equipment will be provided but you are welcome to bring additional materials with you
  • It would be helpful if you had access to the internet (Mobile phone, tablet or computer at home or through a library etc.)

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • No pre reading is required but research on the subject on the internet or in the library may be helpful
  • Just an open mind and a willingness to critically consider a conflict which has shaped the world in which we live.
