The Poetry of John Keats (1795-1821). Enjoy an afternoon exploring some of the best known poems of John Keats. Find out why he is considered one of the greatest poets in the English language. No poetry reading experience required- open to all levels of interest and background.

Course aim

To explore and enjoy a selection of poetry by John Keats, one of the English Romantic poets. This is the two hundredth anniversary of his great odes, composed in 1819. Suitable for both experienced poetry readers and beginners.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed
  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Know something about the life and times of John Keats
  • Know something about his best known and /or finest poetry
  • Analyse and enjoy at least one poem in detail
  • Enjoy reading aloud or listening to others reading alive.
  • Discuss personal responses to one or more of his poems in a small group or to the whole group

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions

What else do I need to know?

  • A selection of materials and basic equipment will be provided but you are welcome to bring additional materials with you
  • You are welcome to bring your own copy of Keats's poetry if you have one.

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • No pre reading is required but research on the subject on the internet or in the library may be helpful
  • You may well benefit from researching Keats's work before the event but you do not have to do this.
