The 1960s was a crossroads moment in the history of popular music. This five week course will explore the various musical genres that came together at this time and their intermingling with the visual arts, poetry, theatre, social movements, and politics to create a heady brew of innovative, exciting sounds. Which means we’ll be listening to some outtasight songs along the way.

Course aim

To identify and explore the various musical genres that came together to form pop music in the 1960s and their intermingling with the visual arts, poetry, theatre, social movements, and politics of the time.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Recognise the musical genres that influenced 1960s pop
  • Identify, through listening to various songs and musicians, the characteristics of 1960s pop
  • Explore how other art forms, social movements, and politics influenced, and were influenced by, pop
  • Follow the various strands of pop music as they developed through the 1960s
  • Be able to hear how pop music developed through the 1960s

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor

What else do I need to know?

  • Nothing else is needed

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • No pre reading is required but research on the subject on the internet or in the library may be helpful
