Clarion Digital Skills - Introduction to ICT

This course is for students who have little or no digital skills and we will provide opportunities for them to build their confidence in using digital for everyday situations. The course covers keyboard and mouse skills, using the Microsoft Windows environment, basic word processing skills, accessing the internet and online browsing, shopping online and saving money, creating and using email accounts and staying safe online

Course aim

The aim of the course is to provide students with an introduction to basic IT and digital skills like using a mouse and keyboard, getting online, creating and using an email account and being safe online.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed
  • This course is for beginners

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Use key aspects of a computer (mouse, keyboard).
  • Navigate around the Microsoft Windows environment.
  • Use basic software packages such as Word for creating documents, CVs and letter writing.
  • Identify web browsers and use these to navigate the internet safely.
  • Create and actively use an email account with attachments, recognising scam emails and using it safely.

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • You will take part in a range of different activities with your tutor and the other students in your clas . Activities may include tutor presentation, small group work, working in pairs, class discussions, short tasks and research.

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning

What else do I need to know?

  • All materials will be provided
  • A selection of materials and basic equipment will be provided but you are welcome to bring additional materials with you

  • No pre reading or pre course work is required
