Course aim

To provide a fun and informative introduction to flower arranging for beginners with a view to applying the basic principles and elements of design, colour and structure in flower arranging.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers
  • This course is for learners of all abilities. You will learn basic floristry techniques and skills in a fun environment. With each new design you will learn the principles and elements of design. No experience needed.

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Develop knowledge and understanding of the principles of basic floristry
  • Develop skills required when working with flowers, foliage and materials
  • Describe different types of flowers and foliage to use as well as design, colour and structure.
  • Apply, develop and reflect on own creativity in design
  • Recognise and take responsibility for Health and Safety

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • Demostrations by tutor. Visual and pactical hands on application by learners. Reflection and evaluation

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions
  • A file of work will be kept which will help to record your progress

What else do I need to know?

  • A selection of materials and basic equipment will be provided but you are welcome to bring additional materials with you
  • What will I need to provide myself? Apron, floristry scissors, pen & paper. Materials as and when advised and requested. Your tutor will advise you at the first lesson what resources and materials are needed for each session if and when required.

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • No pre reading or pre course work is required
  • No pre reading is required but research on the subject on the internet or in the library may be helpful
