From Reagan to Trump

Ref: C2227178

Gain an understanding, in part, of the USA's development from Regan to Trump. We explore how, since 1980, the USA handled the continuing demands of global dominance political, economic and cultural taken up, reluctantly, after victory in 1945. This dominance has seemed under grave threat. Its international peace keeping role distorted by the Cold War and latterly, the war on terrorism-overstretched its economy in the early 21st century. The Wilsonian legacy of exporting American values produced instability, especially, in the Middle East and growing anti Americanism. American society, fractured by debilitating social, economic and racial inequalities, defeat in Vietnam, flaws in various Presidents and industrial changes still seeks harmony, balance and confidence, though politically, Bill Clinton's and Obama's charismatic creation of enthusiastic popular support has polarised attitudes and eroded that bi-partisanship, crucial to the successful working of Government.

Course aim

Since 1980 the USA has seesawed between triumphs and defeats. Internally stubborn inequalities, social, racial and economic, resist remedies. Can stability & confidence be found hereafter?
