Day School: Scandinavian Landscape Painting (c.1840 to 1910)

Ref: C2227157

Nature in the Nordic countries is characterised by its vastness, wilderness and remoteness. The light can also be exceptional with the midnight sun and auroras. Unsurprisingly, nature is a recurring theme in Nordic art. From the 19th century onward, Scandinavian artists have created a fascinating body of landscape paintings. They reveal a variety of way to perceive and understand nature, from the rational and empirical to the subjective and magical. This study-day will be a chance to discover artists and works little known outside of Scandinavia, such as J.C. Dahl, P.S Krøyer, Nikolai Astrup, and Akseli Gallen-Kallela. As a conclusion, we will see how contemporary Nordic artists have dealt with this –sometimes overpowering– heritage.
