Explore the diversity of the American Modernist short story from the perspective of the literary journals and publishing houses that first gave a platform to these daring new voices. This course will guide students through the theoretical framework of short story writing in order to illuminate the structures, themes, and styles employed by the writers who broke existing storytelling conventions and attached new significance to the form at the turn of the twentieth century.

Course aim

This course will guide students through the theoretical framework of short story writing in order to introduce the writers who broke existing storytelling conventions and attached new significance to the form at the turn of the twentieth century.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Demonstrate an understanding of the structure of the short story
  • Develop an understanding of the characteristics of literary modernism
  • Illustrate knowledge of the lives and styles of these American writers

How will I be taught?

  • You will be advised to read the set stories ahead of each class

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning

  • All materials will be provided
