This Creative Writing course aims to encourage the learner to explores a wide range of writing activities. Each week we will focus on a selected theme or topic combined with supporting visual images to start exploring ideas, encourage conversation and to express own thoughts on possible story lines. We will discuss together or in smaller group’s ideas about characters, what is happening in the image and use these ideas for possible story ideas before starting to write own work or shared work. We will consider the setting, plot or dilemma and resolution to the story. Each week learners will be encouraged to communicate their own stories assisted, when required, by the tutor or other learners from a group effort.The tutor will give positive feedback and encourage others to contribute to discussions on the work by others. All abilities and ages are welcome.

Course aim

This course aims to introduce creative writing in a unique way by using visual imagery to stimulate ideas for stories and to encourage creative ideas. A variety of communication skills will be used to tell our own or group stories together.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed
  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers
  • This creative writing course is inclusive and welcomes learners of all abilities, ages and experiences. Learners are encouraged to develop their own work or work in small groups to develop ideas and characters using a range of visual imagery and different themes.

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • plan a story considering the setting, date of story, characters, dialogue and theme within a limited word count
  • select a format for my own work and produce a story
  • express own work to other learners and respond to feedback
  • use feedback to improve my work

How will I be taught?

  • The tutor will use a range of appropriate teaching styles and use visual imagery to stimulate ideas and possible story lines for learners. Learners will be encouraged to produce drawings or sketches to support their stories. Group work can be used or partners to develop a story.

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • Feedback is an essential tool in creative writing which can offer constructive and positive comments to learners work. Learner will be encouraged to respond to feedback from the tutor and other learners to help to improve and refine their work.

  • Nothing else is needed
