Day School: The Challenge of the Fens

Ref: C2226980

The intensely farmed landscapes of the Fens depend on a complicated balance among diverse factors: local management of water, soil, gravel and clay, wildlife, farm herds and crops; management of water upstream, in the Midlands; and levels of land and sea to the north and east. Study of changes in the balance over the past four millennia can help in predicting the district's future. Over the past four centuries, shifts among economic, political and ethical priorities in the district itself, across the rest of Britain and, recently, the EU, have complicated the process greatly.
