A one day school in which you will examine the ceremonial aspects of the city during the Renaissance, explore how Venice celebrated various events and gain an understanding of the art and culture of the most serene republic.

Tea and coffee from 10:30. Inclusive of a 1 hour 15 min lunch break. Course ends at 3.30pm.

Course aim

Examine the ceremonial aspects of the city during the Renaissance, explore how Venice celebrated various events and gain an understanding of the art and culture of the most serene republic.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Identify governmental structures of Venice from 1500-1797 and the way the republic used ceremonies to propagate the myth of Venice.
  • Discuss some of the most important annual events and how they were celebrated.
  • Discuss art, culture and life in the city during this period.

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions

What else do I need to know?

  • Nothing else is needed

  • No pre reading is required but research on the subject on the internet or in the library may be helpful
