Day School: Geishas

Ref: C2226924

The Geisha are an enduring symbol of Japan, but what do we actually know about their secretive, mysterious world, known in Japan as the Flower and Willow World. In this course we will look at how girls enter this world, how they are trained and progress through the ranks, how they make money, the significance of their clothing, hairstyles, ceremonies, music, games and behaviour, and how the Geisha have managed to survive immense social change in Japan from the 18th century to the present day, as well as some of the new competing forms of entertainment that have their roots in Geisha culture.
