The Second World War brought immense change to England’s country houses which were requisitioned for use as everything from intelligence stations to girls’ schools. This course will look at these changes and their effects. 10.30-11.30 : Country Houses in the 1930’s; preparing for war. 11.30-11.45 : Break. 11.45-12.45 : Country Houses during the Second World War. 12.45-13.45 : Lunch 13.45 –15.00 : The Country Houses during the Second World War in Documents. 15.00-15.15 : Tea 15.15-16.00 : The Aftermath of the War, Conclusions and Further Ideas for Study

Day runs from 10:30-4pm with an hour lunch break at 1pm. Meeting in Cavalier Hall.

Course aim

The course aims to give an understanding of how country houses were used during the Second World War and the impact of the war on the houses and owners.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed
  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • 1. Understand how preparations were made to use country houses during war in the 1930’s.
  • 2. Recognise how houses were used during the Second World War
  • 3. Recognise how the Second World War threatened the future of the country house.

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor

What else do I need to know?

  • Nothing else is needed

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • No pre reading is required but research on the subject on the internet or in the library may be helpful
