Day School: Tea - a history

Tea became popular in Europe in the 17th century. Merchants discovered that Chinese people had been drinking tea for at least a thousand years. We will consider how, through history, tea has been enjoyed in various cultures. We will focus on England and discuss why tea became the national drink.

Day school finishes at 4pm as includes a 1 hour lunchbreak

Course aim

This course will chart the development of tea drinking from it origins in China through to becoming England’s national drink.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Identify the factors that lead to the rise in the popularity of tea drinking in Europe.
  • Discuss the origins of tea drinking in China
  • Describe the way in which tea has been enjoyed by two different cultures.
  • Assess the timeline for the development of the popularity of tea from its origins in China to becoming England’s national drink.

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion

  • Nothing else is needed
