Boudicca's Revolt

Ref: C2226867

Boudica's revolt was part of a national uprising against Roman rule. This course looks at the impact of the Roman invasion and the subsequent settlement on a sophisticated Iron Age society. In doing so it uses both archaeological and documentary evidence from both sides. By doing so, it seeks to establish the reasons why many Britons preferred war and the risk of death to the "Pax Romana".

Sessions run from 09.45-11.45 as 15 min coffee break included. Half term break on 30/10/2019

Course aim

The course is about contrasting cultures. Using mainly archaeological material it looks at life in Iron Age Britain. The arrival of the Romans leads to imposed change. Some Britons welcome it. Others determine to resist, hence Boudica's revolt..

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed
  • This course is for people with an interest in history. It deals with an unfamiliar period and an unfamiliar name (Boudica). Interpreting the evidence is the basis of this course. It's interactive. There's lots of discussion and a good deal of fun.

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • To examine the nature of society in Britain prior to the Roman invasions.
  • To investigate the impact of Rome on Britain (a) during the period of informal Romanisation, and (b) post invasion
  • To analyse the nature of the resistance to Rome, both before and immediately after the invasion.
  • To make judgements as to why resistance failed.
  • To do so using the sources available at the time and subsequently.
