Into Thin Air details three famous disappearances in the Americas that continue to baffle historians - The Roanoke Island Mystery in the 1580s, The Franklin Expedition in the 1840s, and Colonel Fawcett and the Search for the Lost City of Z in the Amazon in 1925.

Course aim

To examine three famous historical disappearances.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Outline the historical arguments concerning the loss of the Roanoke Colony in America
  • Discuss the historical arguments concerning the disappearance of the Franklin Expedition in Canada
  • Outline the historical arguments concerning the disappearance of Colonel Percy Fawcett in the Amazon jungle
  • Present logical arguments for each disappearance
  • Identify the periods discussed and the current historical debates

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor

  • Nothing else is needed
