Caravaggio and Rome around 1600

Ref: C2226831

The dramatic, passionate and violent narratives that describe Caravaggio’s life originated in his lifetime and are perpetuated in modern scholarship. As a consequence his works are often understood through autobiography. This study day will evaluate these narratives and analyse Caravaggio’s paintings in their historical context. We will consider the stylistic conventions of naturalism and classicism, look at the wider artistic community in Rome around 1600 and see how Caravaggio’s followers interpreted his works.
