Lucy Blunden is a violinist who loves to play and listen to string chamber music. Join a journey through the era, covering the lives of the composers, listen to examples of the music and engage in "homework" to explore for yourself, should you wish to do so.

Course aim

Lush, rich and unctuous chamber music in the 19th C plucks at our heart strings. Listen to and learn more about the composers, explore instrumental use, recurrent themes and live examples of these gorgeous sounds.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed
  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers
  • No musical instrument playing experience required.

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Listen to and discuss examples of Romantic string chamber music
  • Identify differences and similarities between a number of composers.
  • Identify recurrent thematic materials within and between various musical pieces.

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor

What else do I need to know?

  • Nothing else is needed

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • No pre reading or pre course work is required
  • You may wish to listen to string chamber music by Romantic composers such as Schubert, Brahms, Dvorak and Mendelssohn prior to the course starting.
