Course aim

American social history c1850s to c1950s viewed through the prism of popular music

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • identify some styles of music of the period covered by the course
  • Recognise some composers and singers of popular music in the period of the course
  • evaluate the importance of African-American music to world culture

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor

What else do I need to know?

  • Nothing else is needed

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • A list of relevant books will be provided, together with a list of all the songs & tunes played during the course
