The first 2 sessions cover Russian/Soviet history up to WW2, 3rd session deals with last half of C20th, including tutor's life there as a nanny in the 1960s and particularly as a teacher in 1987 during Perestroika.This stay led to lasting friendships giving her a rare insight into Russian life. Remaining sessions on her travels and encounters in post-Soviet Russia and the Caucasus. All sessions illustrated with music, slides and various realia, and accompanied by a variety of handouts.

Course aim

Presenting the history of Russia/the USSR together with life in Soviet and post-Soviet Russia and travels there and in the Caucasus.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Identify at least one aspect of Russian life or history of which I have a deeper working knowledge
  • Recognise some of the forces that have shaped Russians' attitudes to life and authority
  • Approach reports in the media about events in Russia from a more informed position.

How will I be taught?

  • Your own researches - books, internet, TV and radio etc. - into the topics arising from each session may add to your enjoyment of the course.

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • If you have any concerns about your progress or the course in general do please talk to your tutor!

What else do I need to know?

  • Nothing else is needed

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • No pre reading is required but research on the subject on the internet or in the library may be helpful
