Anachronistic dynasties survived and the will to change was expressed in the Arab spring, swiftly succeeded by an iron winter. Israel was now a factor, as well as the survival of regimes in Syria, Lebanon, and Iran.

Course aim

This course explores the region from 1956 to 2020, with the region was primarily affected by Washington’s policies rather than those of Moscow, Paris, and London.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Describe the post-Suez diminished roles of london and Paris, and the hegemony of washington.
  • Explain the new roles of Israel and the liberation movements being persecuted in the region.
  • Discuss insights gained from the literature of the region into popular consciousness.
  • Discuss the post 1918 role of Turkey and the shifting influence of Moscow and how it is key to the 21st century conjuncture.

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion

What else do I need to know?

  • Nothing else is needed
  • All materials will be provided
